The sight of colorful paragliders soaring through the sky is no longer unfamiliar to the residents of Sin Thau Chai village, Ho Thau commune, Tam Duong district. This Dao ethnic village, situated at an altitude of 1,500m above sea level, has long been recognized by paragliding enthusiasts both domestically and internationally as an ideal flying spot. With its high mountainous terrain, mild climate, and stunning natural scenery, Sin Thau Chai has become a venue for numerous large-scale paragliding events, attracting a large number of pilots and tourists.

The Tam Duong Paragliding Festival 2021, with the participation of over 90 domestic and international pilots, once again affirmed Lai Chau’s position on the paragliding map of Vietnam. From Sin Thau Chai, athletes undertake challenging cross-country flights, crossing the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range, heading towards Than Uyen town and returning. These flights not only require physical strength and skill but also courage to overcome harsh weather conditions. In return, they are immersed in the majestic mountain scenery and vast terraced fields from above, a truly unique experience.

Pilot Dinh Trong Hai, a seasoned paragliding pilot, shared: “Lai Chau has extremely favorable natural conditions for cross-country paragliding. Pilots can take off from Sin Thau Chai and fly along the Hoang Lien Son range, achieving impressive flight records with distances of over 100km. There are also quite a few good flying days here, convenient transportation, and especially the pristine and majestic mountain scenery that makes each flight incredibly worthwhile.”

For those new to paragliding, Sin Thau Chai is also an excellent choice. Paragliding clubs regularly organize courses and experience flights with instructor guidance, ensuring safety and providing unforgettable emotions. Paragliding is not only an adventure sport but also a great way to admire the beauty of the Northwest from a completely different perspective.

Trekking Lai Chau: Footprints on Majestic Peaks

Lai Chau is not only famous for paragliding but also an attractive destination for trekking and mountain climbing enthusiasts. It is home to 6 of the 10 highest peaks in Vietnam, including Fansipan, Pu Si Lung, Pu Ta Leng, Ky Quan San, Khang Su Van, and Ta Lien Son. Each mountain possesses its own unique beauty, promising challenging and exploratory trekking journeys.

Trekking in Lai Chau is not for the faint of heart. Journeys to conquer high peaks often last from 2 to 5 days, requiring participants to have good health, wilderness skills, and a persistent and resilient spirit. Hikers will have to overcome steep slopes, traverse dense forests, wade through streams, cross passes, and face harsh weather conditions. However, these difficulties will be well rewarded with magnificent, pristine natural landscapes and memorable experiences.

The ideal trekking season in Lai Chau usually lasts from October to April of the following year. In the autumn, visitors have the opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery of golden and red leaves. In the spring, rhododendrons bloom all over the mountainsides, creating a romantic and poetic scene. Mr. Phan A Pao, a Dao ethnic resident in Ho Thau with many years of experience leading trekking groups, shared: “Tourists often like to go trekking in the fall to hunt for clouds and admire the golden and red leaves. Many groups choose to go in the spring to see the rhododendron flowers.”

Among the famous peaks in Lai Chau, Pu Ta Leng and Ky Quan San (Bach Moc Luong Tu) are known as “rhododendron paradises.” In the spring, these two mountains are covered with vibrant rhododendron blossoms, creating a magnificent natural painting. In addition, Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, is also a must-visit trekking destination when coming to Lai Chau. The Fansipan trekking route from Lai Chau is considered more difficult than the route from Sapa, but it offers more pristine and unique experiences.

Exploring Lai Chau Caves: Mysteries in the Heart of the Mountains

Besides paragliding and trekking, Lai Chau also hides a mysterious underground world with a diverse and rich cave system. According to statistics, about 20 large and small caves have been discovered in Lai Chau, many of which still retain their pristine beauty and have not been fully explored.

Pu Sam Cap cave complex, about 5km from Lai Chau city, is one of the most attractive destinations for cave exploration enthusiasts. This is a large cave complex with many deep branches, containing fantastical stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years. Tien Son Cave (Binh Lu, Tam Duong) and Gia Khau Cave (Nam Loong, Lai Chau city) are also other interesting destinations, attracting visitors with their natural beauty and the mystery of the cave’s depths.

To explore these caves, visitors often have to hike through forests along trails created by local people. The cave exploration journey is not only an opportunity to admire the beauty of nature but also a chance to challenge oneself, overcome darkness, silence, and difficulties within the cave. The cave world with its myriad stalactite shapes and mysterious underground streams will bring visitors powerful and unforgettable emotions.
