Utah, renowned for its majestic and diverse natural landscapes, is a paradise for off-road enthusiasts. With red rock canyons, vast deserts, and challenging trails, Utah offers thrilling adventures for anyone wanting to push their limits and their vehicle’s capabilities.

To test the off-road prowess of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS, Motor1 took this luxury SUV to Utah, where the off-road trails are not only beautiful but also filled with obstacles. Could the GLS 2020 conquer these routes?

Conquering Utah Terrain with the Mercedes-Benz GLS 2020

The 90-minute trail, filled with steep rocky inclines and muddy puddles, was a rigorous test of the new generation Mercedes-Benz GLS’s off-road capabilities. In “Off-Road” mode, the GLS 580’s 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine effortlessly navigated gravel sections, especially with the support of the EQ Boost electric motor, generating a total torque of up to 700Nm.

The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution (standard on the GLS 580) ensured all four wheels maintained traction, combined with a responsive 9-speed automatic transmission. This combination allowed the GLS to overcome challenging terrain with ease.

Mercedes-Benz opted for a 9-speed automatic transmission instead of a dual-clutch transmission because it offers greater benefits in off-road capability and towing capacity, up to 3,493 kg. This was proven through the GLS’s hill climbs in Utah.

The luxury SUV rarely experienced “lifts” of up to 15 degrees or body roll on slopes, thanks to the effective air suspension system. This system can adjust the ride height according to the terrain, protecting the undercarriage from large rocks and deep potholes.

One of the few drawbacks of the Mercedes-Benz GLS 2020 is the overly light steering, which makes the driving feel less authentic. However, this did not significantly affect the overall driving experience.

Overcoming bumpy roads, the GLS remained comfortable and confident on dry trails. In Off-Road mode, the GLS becomes more robust, utilizing a two-stage transfer case with torque-on-demand adjustment and a low-range gear designed specifically for difficult terrain.

Overcoming Water Obstacles

To wade through deep water puddles, the GLS 2020 utilizes the electronic lift system to set the suspension to the third level, increasing ground clearance by nearly 216mm. The GLS 2020’s water wading depth is up to 584.2 mm.

The GLS’s torque control is also impressive. In necessary situations, this SUV can quickly transfer 100% of torque to the front or rear axle for maximum support. The driver’s forward visibility is significantly improved by the trail camera system, making it easy to avoid obstacles and minimize body scratches. This system operates at speeds up to 16 km/h.

Although the new GLS was not tested in Rocking Mode this time, this feature helps the vehicle free itself from being bogged down by automatically raising and lowering the suspension, continuously increasing and decreasing tire pressure on the sand surface. Rocking Mode and other off-road modes of the GLS 2020 are supported by the E-Active Body Control intelligent suspension system, combined with a 48V electrical architecture. E-Active Body Control is an active suspension system that combines both air suspension and hydropneumatic suspension.

With E-Active Body Control, the new GLS has extremely proactive and effective body control. The body does not pitch forward or dive during acceleration or braking, and does not roll when moving on uneven terrain. The E-Active Body Control system gives the GLS 2020 capabilities similar to those of body-on-frame SUVs in water fording and overcoming gravel roads.

Conclusion: GLS 2020 – A Versatile Luxury SUV

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 2020 is not just a high-end SUV, but also a true off-road machine, with capabilities comparable to the G-Class. The Utah test proved the GLS 2020’s strength and off-road ability, dispelling any doubts about this luxury SUV’s off-road prowess. If you are looking for a vehicle that is both luxurious, comfortable, and capable of conquering Utah’s most beautiful off-road trails, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 2020 is a worthy consideration.
