If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing herds of mighty bison or majestic elk, creatures frequently featured on postcards and in photo books about Yellowstone, you might be surprised to learn that they represent just a small part of the vibrant tapestry of wildlife here. Yellowstone, spanning nearly 900,000 hectares, is also home to over 300 bird species, 16 fish species, 6 reptile species, 5 amphibian species, and an impressive 67 different mammal species – the highest concentration of mammals in the contiguous 48 states of the United States. Among them, the gray wolf, often called the “ghost” of the mountains and forests, is a particular highlight, attracting adventurous and inquisitive travelers. The northern region of Yellowstone National Park is renowned as one of the best places in the world to observe gray wolves in their natural, wild habitat.

To meet the growing demand for wildlife exploration and experiences, especially among gray wolf enthusiasts, the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole has partnered with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris and Yellowstone Safari Company to offer a unique and luxurious travel program: a full-day gray wolf watching tour in Yellowstone. This is not just a rare opportunity to see these precious animals in their natural environment, but also a journey to discover Yellowstone’s unique ecosystem, while contributing to the conservation of gray wolves for future generations.

Ryan Grande, General Manager of Four Seasons Jackson Hole, shared: “The opportunity to witness the Yellowstone wolf population in the wild is an invaluable and unforgettable experience. This new tour program not only provides guests with memorable moments but also deepens their understanding of the complexity of this unique ecosystem, thereby raising awareness of environmental conservation and the protection of native wildlife, especially the precious gray wolf.”

Discover Yellowstone National Park – Kingdom of Wildlife

Yellowstone, the first national park in the United States, established in 1872, was once home to hundreds of gray wolves. However, over nearly a century, the gray wolf population severely declined, even facing the threat of extinction. According to the U.S. National Park Service, by the 1940s, gray wolves had almost completely disappeared from Yellowstone and many other areas within the contiguous 48 states. The primary cause stemmed from misconceptions about wolf predation habits, as they were considered a serious threat to other animals, particularly livestock.

From 1914 to 1926, at least 136 wolves were killed in Yellowstone National Park. By the 1940s, information about wolf packs in the area was almost nonexistent. By the mid-20th century, gray wolves were nearly extinct in the contiguous 48 states of the United States, a stark warning about human over-intervention in nature.

Fortunately, awareness of the importance of gray wolves in the ecosystem gradually changed. In the mid-1990s, Yellowstone began implementing a gray wolf population recovery program, a challenging but incredibly meaningful endeavor. Wild gray wolves from Canada were relocated to Yellowstone and surrounding areas, marking a new chapter for this species in the national park.

More than 25 years later, the U.S. National Park Service and conservation partners continue to research and closely monitor the wolf population in Yellowstone. The resurgence of gray wolves is not only a testament to the success of conservation programs but also affirms the crucial role of this species in maintaining the balance of the Yellowstone ecosystem. Matt Scott, owner of Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris, emphasizes: “This is a fantastic experience to witness the wild beauty of the Yellowstone wolf population, while raising awareness about the necessity to protect them from extinction.”

The adventure begins with a private flight departing from the Four Seasons resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, aboard a modern Pilatus aircraft, accommodating up to 8 passengers. The tour is limited to a maximum of 6 guests to ensure comfort and privacy. The plane will fly north, passing over the wilderness of the majestic Grand Tetons and the vast Yellowstone basin, before landing in Livingston, Montana – a town on the northern edge of the Yellowstone ecosystem and also the area with the highest wolf concentration.

In Livingston, guests will be greeted by a veteran naturalist with extensive knowledge of the history, behavior, and life of gray wolves. The naturalist will share fascinating and informative details about these animals, helping guests better understand the role of wolves in the Yellowstone ecosystem, as well as ongoing conservation efforts. After the introduction, the wolf watching expedition officially begins. Guests will be taken to areas with the highest probability of wolf sightings within the national park, using both hiking and luxurious wildlife viewing vehicles.

During the journey and observation, the naturalist will guide guests on how to identify animal tracks, distinguish different wildlife species, and share captivating stories about Yellowstone’s natural world. Guests will not only have the chance to see gray wolves in their natural habitat but may also encounter other wildlife such as elk, bison, black bears, or grizzly bears, creating a diverse and enriching nature exploration experience.
