Hẻm núi Last Chance Gulch, nơi khởi nguồn của thành phố Helena

After a year of traveling a long and arduous 436 km to Helena to complete my green card application, I suddenly realized that, besides the permanent resident card in the United States, I had also brought back another priceless gift: a love for this land with a distinctly feminine name. Helena, the peaceful capital of Montana, is not as bustling and noisy as famous tourist cities, but it holds within it a captivating beauty and fascinating historical stories waiting to be discovered.

Montana, nicknamed the “Treasure State,” is not only famous for the majestic Glacier National Park or the magnificent Yellowstone National Park. It also holds hidden gems, lesser-known lands, bearing pristine beauty and unique cultural and historical values. Helena is one of them, an ideal destination for those who want to seek difference, to explore the lesser-known aspects of America.

Helena – A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Montana

Helena, the capital of Montana, has a contemplative, ancient appearance, quite different from the image of a vibrant, modern city. It does not have skyscrapers or flashy shopping areas, but it possesses a unique charm, stemming from its turbulent gold mining history, its unique architecture bearing the imprint of time, and the surrounding pristine nature.

Like many other cities in Montana, Helena originated from a gold mine. The story began in 1864, when four men from Georgia, carrying the dream of changing their lives, set foot in this land. After days of бесплодно searching, when hope seemed to have run out, they decided to try their luck one last time at a nearby river branch. And a miracle happened, on the night of July 14, 1864, they found gold in a stream that was later named Last Chance Gulch.

News of the new gold mine spread quickly, turning Helena into a promised land overnight. People flocked here, bringing hopes of getting rich and building a new life. However, the city’s name went through many changes. Initially, it was called Crabtown, after one of the four Georgian men who found gold. Then, funny names like Pumpkinville and Squashtown were also proposed. Finally, because most of the newly arrived miners came from Minnesota, they chose to name the city after a town in their hometown, Saint Helena. Helena, a shortened version of Saint Helena, became the official name and has remained to this day.

The Story Behind the Name Helena: From Gold Dreams to Roman Empress

The choice of the name Saint Helena, according to many interpretations, stemmed from the deep homesickness of the miners far from home. But who was Saint Helena? This question sparks curiosity and leads us to a fascinating historical figure.

Saint Helena, also known as Saint Helen, was a Roman empress who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries. She married Emperor Constantius Chlorus, but this marriage did not last when she was abandoned for political reasons. However, fate smiled on Helena when her son, Constantine the Great, became Emperor of the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine bestowed upon his mother the titles of Augusta and Empress Mother.

Not only a royal figure, Saint Helena was also known as a devout Christian. According to the records of the historian Socrates Scholasticus, she was the one who found the True Cross, the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus. The story of Saint Helena has transcended space and time, reaching the distant land of Montana, and becoming the name of a city bearing unique historical and cultural imprints.

Helena’s Architecture: Golden Imprints and Cultural Intersections

Helena’s prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is clearly reflected in the city’s architecture. The completion of the Northern Pacific Railway project in 1883 transformed Helena into an important trading center, boosting the economy and attracting residents from all over. Magnificent mansions and massive public buildings sprung up, carrying various architectural styles, reflecting the cultural intersection and open spirit of this land.

Strolling along the streets of Helena, you can easily notice the influence of Art Deco style with soft curves, sophisticated decorative patterns inspired by nature. Saint Helena Cathedral bears the strong imprint of Gothic Revival with its characteristic pointed arches and brilliant stained glass windows. The Securities Building, another prominent structure, showcases the Romanesque Revival style with its robust, solid beauty.
